Some disability awareness events your chapter can coordinate include:
• Empathy Training Exercises - Used by chapters to expose
the public to exercises that simulate what it MIGHT be like to have a disability.
• Empathy Dinners - Bring in parents and other community members
and help them gain a greater understanding of people with disabilities.
• Sporting Events - Schedule an exhibition game between
your chapter and local wheelchair basketball, hockey, soccer, or baseball team.
This offers a glimpse into the diverse world of athletes with disabilities.
• Speakers with a Disability - Have your chapter sponsor
or host a speaker who has a disability. This is an ideal way to acquaint you,
your fellow students, and the community with issues pertinent to people with
disabilities.
• Accessibility Walks - Using a wheelchair
or prescription cane take a tour of your campus facilities with faculty and
campus administrators to determine what areas of campus may be difficult for
students with disabilities to negotiate.
*Push America neither claims nor suggests any of these events or exercises to be representative of exactly what it means or is like to have a disability.
