Disability Awareness
Disability awareness is an important component of a chapter's Push America programming. Chapter's events and activities help to raise community awareness on the topic of disability and also create an open dialogue on the subject. Chapters across the country organize disability awareness events promoting a better understanding of the abilities of people with disabilities.

Disability does not mean "inability." People who live with disabilities are people first. If there is one thing people can take away from your activities, be sure they understand the importance of “people first” language. People with disabilities may have to do things a little differently than an able-bodied person, but they have jobs, play sports, and join fraternities just like everyone else.

As a member of Pi Kappa Phi your commitment to people with disabilities is important and educating yourself on the subject of disability will help you become a more knowledgeable advocate to others as well. While we provide you with an educational foundation on disability, we encourage you to become actively involved in this learning process. Sometimes the best way to learn is through volunteering and interacting with people with disabilities. Get to know someone with a disability today and be prepared to share your knowledge with someone else tomorrow.

What is a disability?
The U.S. Census and the Americans with Disabilities Act define a disability as a physical, sensory, mental or cognitive impairment that limits one's ability to participate in one or more common daily activities.
